Our CPD specialist events, for accredited counsellors and pastoral carers, meet the ongoing training requirements necessary to sustain professional accreditation with the Association of Christian Counsellors (ACC). They are also a relevant resource for those who have been trained within a secular environment.

Grief and Loss

An opportunity to look at grief and loss in an experiential and creative way. The morning will be led by Tori Barker-Ross, Co-ordinator of the Bereavement Counselling Service at Eden Valley Hospice and having worked at the hospice for 9 years. She is an experienced counsellor, supervisor and trainer.
Attachment Theory in Practice

Dr Christine Young, an experienced psychologist and counsellor, will be helping us to put attachment theory into our everyday practice, giving us examples of how this can be helpful for our clients.

William Miller will introduce us to EMDR (Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing), a form of psychotherapy that was developed to resolve symptoms resulting from disturbing and unresolved life experiences. It uses a structured approach to address past, present, and future aspects of disturbing memories.
William Miller, a Registered Mental Health Officer, Facilitator of Cumbria Domestic Violence Perpetrators programme and was a Part Time Lecturer at University of Cumbria, an experienced therapist, and before retirement a supervisor at Borderline.
Level 2 An Introduction to Christian Counselling
This course is intended for those who want to explore the ministry of counselling. It would also be useful training for house group leaders, pastoral care teams, youth leaders, etc.
The course includes a mixture of training methods and looks at issues counsellors might face and the skills that are required.
Course Content
This is a 60 hour foundation course in counselling for Christians.
The basic counselling model taught on the course is the Egan three stage model.
- At the end of the course you will be able to:
- understand the distinct nature of Biblical counselling
- explain the differences between counselling, pastoral care and ministry
- understand and explain a Biblical view of God and humanity
- demonstrate a range of basic counselling skills
- recognise the value of a range of approaches to counselling
- show awareness of how your own values, attitudes, beliefs and assumptions affect the counselling relationship
- understand and explain basic legal and ethical issues relating to counselling
- see the need for referral and supervision
- recognise the impact of relationship difficulties in peoples lives
Homework involves a number of written assignments.
Venue: The course will run over 5 Saturdays, 9.00 am - 5.00 pm at Borderline, Carlisle
Dates: Sept 17th, Oct 1st, Oct 22nd, Nov 5th, Nov 19th
Cost: £160 plus £45 fee for OCN
All applicants must supply acknowledgement of their participation in the course from their Church leader. The course has OCN & ACC recognition.
